Classroom Mentors
    Resources and Registration

The Center for Teaching International Relations (CTIR) is looking for a number of JKSIS graduate volunteers to participate in a World Affairs Challenge Mentor Program. These volunteers will visit and mentor student-led teams from underserved schools participating in the 2011 World Affairs Challenge. Specific tasks will include:

·     Visiting targeted schools anywhere from once a month to once a week during the preparation phase of the Challenge, providing research tips and techniques to student-led teams

 

·     Teaching lessons, as appropriate, to give students a better understanding of the complexities involved in this year’s Challenge topics

 

·     Writing and submitting very short, periodical reports on the particular World Affairs Challenge team(s) mentored (includes a description of what the students are researching, what their Formal Presentation topic will be, any challenges faced during the preparation phase, etc.)

 

·     Providing feedback on the volunteer mentor program and the experience of mentoring World Affairs Challenge teams

The ideal candidate will:

·     Be articulate, gracious, and professional on the phone, in person, and in writing

·      Have a solid knowledge of current issues related to one or more of the Challenge topics

·     Have excellent attention to detail

·     Be self-directed and conscientious

·     Be responsible and motivated

·     Be interested in global education and young people

·      Have his/her own transportation

CTIR is dedicated to engaging primary and secondary students in learning about the world. The 2011World Affairs Challenge tournaments, for middle and high school students, will be held April 9, 2011, on the DU campus. CTIR seeks several dynamic, driven individuals to serve as mentors for teams participating in the 2011 event.

Time parameters:

 

·     Students will be able to volunteer primarily during the spring quarter, but really beginning in mid February and ending in April (we also encourage mentors to volunteer on the day of the event)

·     1-2 hours per week (this will depend on the volunteer’s availability)
